Ex-football star returns to barbecue for home crowd

The smoky aroma of pork ribs and shoulder roasting on the barbecue wafts across Five Corners on Charleston’s West Side from an oversized grill wedged on one corner. Adrian “Bay” Wright mans the smoldering beast, turning over seasoned racks of ribs, pork butts and chicken, and occasionally adding a squirt of water to fan the flames.

“The smell pulls them in. I tell them the smell is free. Now come taste it,” Wright said.

“The grill man is the most important part of the operation. Take 2 ½ hours to do the meat. Most people smoke their meat. Me I grill. But I use oak wood for the flavor,” Adrian says, pointing to the burning coals of oak beneath the smoker.
